An acquaintance just got his ‘98 M3 started after 8 years of sitting. This is what the engine sounds like, how concerned should he be? It was run briefly to record this, and has yet to be driven or have an oil change.

E36 M3s have loud valves to begin with. I was always concerned mine way ticking too loud but M3 guys say it’s normal to an extent, especially when the oil is a lighter weight. Given the oil is 8 years old it’s probably hilariously thin. An oil change would probably help the noise.

For having not been ran in 8 years, it sounds like great. Might be worn lifters?

Change the oil and then get back to us.

I think that’s just what hyrdaulic lifters sound like when they’ve been dry for 8 years. They should get quieter, and an oil change won’t hurt

Oil change and a valve adjustment and it will probably sound tops. Even as it sits now it is very quiet compared to my S54 which gets regular oil changes and valve adjustments, potato video sound quality may be what is fooling us though.

I’m also located in CT and know of several independent BMW mechanics around the state if your aquaintance needs one.

Well then that would do him no good! At least he is close to Turner Motorsports in Amesbury, MA.
